Though the 1990’s and up until now, most circuits drawn by engineers and designers have been drawn in AutoCAD. Typically the drawing environment consists of AutoCAD and a home-grown library of AutoCAD blocks, with symbols stored in Windows directories.
From an engineering perspective, the drawback to this has been that the symbols have been created on an ad-hoc, as needed basis, without standardization, and with different levels of detail depending on the creator and the mood of the day.
Typically circuit drawing by Sales engineers has remained a hand-sketch function because AutoCAD is expensive and requires skill.
Many third party symbol libraries for AutoCAD Lite were created by third party developers, but these symbols were shallow, and merely grazed the surface of the circuit drawing needs. Autodesk, too, discouraged powerful applications being developed on AutoCAD Lite, and therefore Platform was a big issue.
Some stand-alone circuit drawing tools were developed around the world, but they lacked technical depth, compatibility with AutoCAD, and were primarily geared as training and visualization tools, not as powerful engineering tools.
The OEMs did not help either. Large companies like Eaton, Vickers, Parker Hannifin, do not have comprehensive symbol libraries and data available for their systems integrators.
On the other hand, other power systems industries like electronics got organized with inexpensive easy to use CAD platforms, complete with OEM specific electric component symbols containing all sorts of relevant design data.
After four years of technical development, and deployment of
VEST circuit drawing technology at hydraulic OEMs, VEST has now
released inexpensive packaged solutions for hydraulic circuit
design. HyDraw A405 for AutoCAD 2004/2005/2006 and HyDraw V400
for Microsoft Visio.
